Ten Years On - Longworth Open Gardens
Early in 1996, HALF planned an open garden day. In June twelve gardens opened and, to our astonishment, raised £872.00. We tried again the next year and made even more, over a thousand pounds. Since then it has become part of the village calendar, an annual event which has raised £9,142.73 for HALF funds. I can’t remember now whether HALF Steering Group actually thought up the idea or whether it’s another instance of something picked up from The Archers!

This year nine gardens, including one with special attractions for toddlers and another for all train buffs, opened on 12 June. It was an enjoyable and, despite the chill in the air and competition from other villages opening on the same day, a profitable one. Warm thanks to all the gardeners and the team of supporters who year after year run the stalls, teas and prepare for the event. The day raised £901.00.
