Longworth trio wins prestigious national award
1 November 2004 – Three friends from Longworth were last week presented with a prestigious national award in London by Olympic Gold Medallist Matthew Pinsent.

Becky Tyrer, Lydia Kenyon and Sara Beazley, all aged 15 and pupils at Matthew Arnold School, received the 4front Award for their initiative in setting up a centre in Kenya for children living on the streets, providing food and washing facilities as well as a safe place to meet, relax and have some fun.

The trio were one of eight groups to receive a cash grant of £3,000. The judges were so impressed with the girls’ entry that they were also made Outstanding Award Winners, receiving a further grant of £2,000 towards the cost of their air fares.

‘We were out in Thika, a town near Nairobi, helping in a summer school organised by a local charity, Action for Children in Conflict. We were so struck by the horrendous situation of the homeless street kids that we decided we had to something about it’, explained Lydia.

‘We already knew about the 4front Awards, so made a video including our ideas on what could be done’, added Becky.

‘We have local organisations who are going to be helping us, and we can’t wait to get back to Thika to see our ideas becoming reality – unfortunately, this may have to wait until our GCSEs have finished’, concluded Sara.

The 4front Awards, funded by the Camelot Foundation, are made to young people who have demonstrated a passionate commitment to improving the lives of other young people. Other winners have included groups developing a guide to major attractions in Cornwall for young disabled people; improving music equipment at a youth club in Middlesbrough; and establishing workshops for young people in East London to develop self-expression and build self-esteem.
